Weather Summary

Weather Underground Forecast for Sunday, May 18, 2008. Tropical Storm Halong will strengthen into a Category 1 typhoon late Sunday night or early Monday morning while traveling northeastward across the northern tip of the Philippines. Northern Luzon can expect to experience strong winds along with intense rain throughout the day. Taiwan can also expect wind and rain from the outer bands of the storm, but not nearly as intense as what is expected in Luzon.

Farther to the north, a low pressure system will sink into the Yellow Sea area. A long cold front associated with this storm will arch through the East China Sea and southeast China. A wide swath of the continent from northern Vietnam through Shanghai will experience areas of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Closer to the storm's center, South Korea will receive some precipitation in the morning, while showery weather is expected in North Korea.

A ridge of high pressure will keep Japan dry.

Tokyo will rise into the upper 60s(F)/lower 20s(C), while Shanghai will see temperatures in the mid-70s(F)/mid-20s(C). Seoul will rise into the mid-60s(F)/upper 10s(C).

For Australia, an upper-level trough of low pressure will leave the east coast of the country, allowing showery weather to decrease in the morning. This will allow a high pressure system to build into the eastern third of the country from the central portion.

As a cold front moves across the Bass Strait, showers are possible in Victoria and Tasmania.

Sydney will rise into the lower 60s(F)/mid-10s(C), while Melbourne will see temperatures in the upper 50s(F)/mid-10s(C). Brisbane will rise into the upper 60s(F)/lower 20s(C).

Dean, Felix and Noel get their names retired; 13th warmest April on record

Dr. Jeff Masters

For the first time since the the incredible Hurricane Season of 2005, a new set of Atlantic hurricane names has been permanently retired. Members of the World Meteorological Organization's Regional Association IV Hurricane Committee decided to retire the names of Hurricane Dean, Hurricane Felix, and Hurricane Noel during their annual meeting in Orlando this week. These names will not be used again because of the significant death and destruction these storms caused i...

Weather History:

Did you know that...

Before careful when you golf. A golfer at the Fox Meadows Course in Memphis, Tenn. was standing near a tree when he was struck by lightning on this date in 1983. The bolt traveled through his neck, down his spine, and out a pocket containing his keys. The bolt then went into the tree nearby.
